The passenger, a 33 year-old man, was aboard a train en route to the Hegewisch station about 8 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, he became "verbally aggressive" toward transit personnel
Officers also found a man armed with a rifle, police said.
He refused orders to put the gun down, and an officer fired at least one shot, hitting him, police said. He was taken to a hospital. Police say his injuries were not life-threatening.
The suspect, John Woods, 66, of Silver Spring, is charged with first-degree murder, assault on a police officer and firearms offenses.
Detectives are investigating whether he shot the man who died and whether or not he fired at officers, police said.
“I just think it speaks to the level of violence that we see in terms of people having access to firearms,” Chief Robert Contee said. “In this case, someone’s life has been lost. My condolences go out to the family.”
The officer was injured, the driver was later taken into custody.

As the officer conducted the stop, the driver sped off. The officer s hand was caught on the driver s side window as the vehicle fled.
The officer fired multiple shots at the vehicle, which was struck by the gunfire.
The officer was injured, the driver was later taken into custody.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Bronx (WABC) An emotionally-disturbed person has been arrested and charged after shots were fired at officers through the front door of a Bronx apartment.
The incident happened on West 183rd Street in the University Heights section at around 11:40 Wednesday morning.
Police say the suspect, 39-year-old Samuel Foster, was barricaded inside an apartment and began shooting through the front door.
At least five shots were fired.
It s unclear if the person was aiming for police.
No one was hurt.
Police say he has since been arrested and charged with attempted murder and reckless endangerment.
