RICHMOND, Va. Nine people were arrested and charged in connection to eight Richmond shootings, Richmond Police announced Friday.
The shootings were all reported in 2021.
âThese arrests and charges are excellent examples of the dedication of our Major Crimes detectives,â Richmond Police Chief Gerald Smith said in a statement sent to the media. âThese cases resulted in these charges thanks to information from the community and the focused commitment from the detective team.â

RICHMOND, Va. A vigil Sunday celebrated the life of a 15-year-old boy killed in South Richmond whose mother remembered him as a responsible, well-mannered hero who was in to school and sports.
Police were called to the 2300 block of Afton Avenue in Bellemeade for a report of a person shot just after 4:45 p.m. Thursday. Officers arrived and found a juvenile male who was suffering an apparent gunshot wound, James Mercante with Richmond Police said. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injury.

RICHMOND, Va. A mother is remembering her slain son, one of the ten people shot over six days in Richmond, as a father of six who loved playing the slots.
Iris Smith-Georgeâs 32-year-old son, James Duke Smith, was wounded outside a convenience store at the corner of N. 1st and Baker streets. If he liked you and deal with you, he d do anything to help you, Smith-George said.
