Mid Canterbury canal car crash: Body of driver and passenger recovered Sun, 4 Jul 2021, 1:55PM
The bodies of a driver and passenger have been recovered from a Mid Canterbury hydroelectric canal after their vehicle left the road last night and plunged into the water.
Emergency services were alerted after the crash at 1am yesterday on Pudding Hill Rd just out of the Methven township.
As of 1pm, Aoraki police district area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said the car had been recovered and one person – who was the passenger – was found dead inside. Police remained at the scene as they continued to search for the driver and the Police National Dive Squad had also been deployed to help with the search. A section of the road remained closed with diversions in place, a police spokeswoman said. Ambulance were notified, but were stood down, a St John spokeswoman said. RDR Management scheme operator Baughan Ward said a decision had been made at 4am on Saturday to turn the water supply to the RDR off to lower the water levels. It would remain off until they were notified by police, Ward said.
