LAKELAND The walls of the downstairs galleries of the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College are covered with 19th Century cancan dancers, along with posters of Parisian performers, all drawn and painted by renowned French artist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.
“We are thrilled to be opening our largest ever show in the museum’s history. It features over 230 works,” PMoA Director Alex Rich said. “Toulouse-Lautrec is one of the best-known artists of the 19th century. If you had ever envisioned what it’s like to be in Paris in the 1890s or the late 19th Century in general, if you’ve ever thought about the Moulin Rouge or the cafes or the cabarets and the concerts and cancan dancers, that is the image that Toulouse-Lautrec has inflected in our culture and has allowed us all to think about in terms of what life was like in the so-called Belle Epoch period.”
