Attendance limitations have been removed for this week’s Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships following updated public health guidance and coordination with Drake University and the Polk County Health Department.
Drake Athletic Director Brian Hardin said, “Recently released CDC guidelines encouraged us to consult with these partners and revisit stadium capacity. We look forward to once again welcoming the best high school athletes our state has to offer to compete on the world-famous Blue Oval in front of all their family and friends who wish to attend.”
The move cancels capacity and seating restrictions in place as recently as two weeks ago. Newly elected Chair of the Board of Control for Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, Osage Superintendent Barb Schwamman, says she’s not surprised the change was made.

Iowa s top health official advised schools and child care centers Friday to drop mask mandates and said children should no longer necessarily be put into quarantine after exposure to the virus, even if they weren t wearing masks. While we acknowledge that some parents may want their child to continue to wear a cloth face covering for reasons that make sense for their family or that child’s individual health condition, we urge schools and child care settings to provide parents and students with the option to make their own decision about mask usage, Kelly Garcia, interim director of the Iowa Department of Public Health, wrote in a letter to school superintendents, child care providers and local health departments Friday.
