Publix employee surrenders in connection to CARES Act fraud LAKELAND – A Lakeland man turned himself in to face charges of Polk CARES Act fraud shortly after Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd s press conferences on Friday morning.  Saget Genoret, 33, was arrested and faces three felony charges: scheme to defraud, grand theft and criminal use of a personal ID. He is the 11th person to be arrested in connection with Polk CARES 2020 fraud.  According to the Sheriff s Office, Genoret submitted a fraudulent letter from his employer, Publix Super Markets, indicating his hours were cut because of the pandemic. He received a $2,000 check from the Polk CARES program.

Florida fire captain arrested in alleged theft of Covid-19 vaccine A Florida firefighter turned himself in to authorities in connection with the alleged theft of Covid-19 vaccine meant for coworkers. Anthony Damiano, a captain with Polk County Fire Rescue, allegedly took three syringes containing doses of Moderna’s vaccine, with the intent to give doses to his elderly mother, according to an arrest affidavit. Damiano surrendered on Wednesday afternoon, according to the affidavit. He has been charged with petit theft and causing another person to falsify official records as a public servant. He has been released on bond from the Polk County Jail, according to inmate records.

The Ledger, Lakeland, Fla. A 17-year Polk County Fire Rescue captain turned himself in to face charges in connection with the alleged theft of COVID-19 vaccines, but not before asking to retire. Tony Damiano, 55, turned himself into Polk County Jail in Bartow about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. He faces one felony count of official misconduct and one misdemeanor count of petty larceny. Damiano was wanted in connection with the theft of three doses of Moderna vaccine, which Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said was carried out by 31-year-old paramedic Joshua Colon at Damiano s order. Colon was arrested on Monday. At the time, Damiano was driving home from California after being deployed with the National Disaster Medical System to aid in the pandemic.

Joshua Colon, 31, was arrested Monday by the Polk County Sheriff s Office after confessing to intentionally stealing three doses of Moderna vaccine then forging paperwork in attempt to cover his actions, according to the Sheriff s Office. We have a responsibility to uphold the community s trust. We found in one of these opportunities we didn t do that, Robert Weech, chief of Polk County Fire Rescue said. We are deeply disappointed. According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, Colon said he stole the vaccines earlier this month at the request of his supervisor, Capt. Tony Damiano, who sought the vaccine for his elderly mother.
