Student Spotlight: Melina Giakoumis Studies Some ‘Cool Critters’ in National Parks to Understand the Effects of Climate Change
By Lida Tunesi
Melina Giakoumis (Biology) the opportunity to fuse two interests: marine conservation and science communication. Plus, she gets to spend the summer at three seashore parks in Massachusetts and Maine.
Giakoumis will devote the next year to studying sea stars in intertidal ecosystems throughout the northeastern U.S. to understand and share with the public how these ecologically important species are responding to climate change. She is one of three students chosen for the fellowship, a partnership led by Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park, the National Park Service, and the National Park Foundation with support from the David Evans Shaw Family Foundation, that seeks to advance conservation and ecosystem science and enhance the stewardship of park resources.
During the Civil War, over 400,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were held prisoner at more than 150 different prison sites. Approximately 56,000 of these died in captivity. Although Andersonville is the most famous Civil War prison, it is only one of many Civil War military prisons that are preserved by the National Park Service. Today Andersonville National Historic Site tells the story of all American prisoners of war.

Director Martin Scorsese understands the significance of a story s location. Taxi Driver wouldn t have had the same effect in a town in Florida as it did in gritty 1970 s New York City, for example. Scorsese s period piece Gangs of New York also showcased the city in the 1800s. The film won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Production Design and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Director. In 2006, the acclaimed director headed to the city of Boston specifically South Boston for his crime-thriller, The Departed, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Both DiCaprio and Scorsese then returned to Beantown for the 2010 film Shutter Island.
