Could governments draw inspiration from Mario Kart to develop sustainable policies?

An American researcher and Mario Kart enthusiast suggests that governments should draw inspiration from the famous video game for sustainable development policies that encourage environmentally friendly agriculture. No, that’s not a misprint. From Mario Kart. Racing along on the Luigi Circuit, you come to a dangerous bend where you skid on a banana skin dropped by one of your rivals, but you manage to land on your wheels and even win a Fire Flower. Having read these couple of lines, experienced gamers will no doubt recognise the familiar world of Mario Kart. The long-standing and highly successful video game series developed in the 1990s has recently been the subject of a very serious study published in

Mario Kart might teach us how to solve poverty

Looking for solutions to some of the world's biggest problems like poverty, environmental sustainability, and agricultural struggles in developing regions can be absolutely mind-bending. There are so many factors to consider that the sheer scope is overwhelming, and maybe that's why it's so hard to solve these kinds of issues. This heated competition between multiple players, who use a variety of game tokens and tools to speed ahead or thwart their competitors, is part of what makes the classic Nintendo racing game that has been around since the early 1990s so appealing.

One Year Later: Lessons from the Pandemic

Twitter Facebook On March 15, 2020, life as we knew it came to an abrupt halt. The commonwealth of Massachusetts had just issued stay-at-home orders, forcing BU to act swiftly. Dorms closed. Teaching and learning went remote. And all but essential personnel began what would be months and months of working from home. Fast forward a year, and we’re still learning to cope, adjust, and recalibrate.  To commemorate the one-year anniversary, we reached out to students, faculty, and staff and asked them to talk about the biggest lessons they’ve learned over the past year.  For some it was a renewed sense of the importance of family. For others, a realization that it’s okay to be selfish (in a good way). Others say the past year has taught them the value of taking chances. Take a look.
