When Judge Angel Kelley was asked to be the keynote speaker at Chelsea’s 14th annual Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony, she didn’t know she would be challenged in thinking about her own story in such a deep manner.
Her challenge was to tell those listening – and there were more than 100 in attendance on Monday morning – how she was the embodiment of MLK’s dream that he spoke about so many years ago.
“When I was told it was about me being the dream, I had a little concern and hesitancy,” she said. “That’s because I didn’t have the audacity to believe I embodied Dr. King’s magnanimous dream. I certainly share his dream. My story is not perfect, but I am the dream my parents dreamt.”

The rain fell relentlessly as the line of cars inched into the parking lot, backed up further than Lisa Scales could see. Peering through fogged-up glasses, she walked up to each car and asked the driver where she should put the box of food. “In the back seat or the trunk?”
Once the provisions were loaded up, she asked, “How are you holding up?”

Atanda earned his J.D. in 2012 from the University of Tennessee College of Law and received his B.A. in 2008 from Tennessee State University.
Bernard focuses on patent and trademark prosecution in the mechanical, electromechanical and industrial arts. Bernard earned his J.D. in 2013 from the University of Alabama School of Law. He received his B.S., with highest honors, from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2010 where he majored in mechanical engineering.

Angela Onwuachi-Willig is one of the country’s leading scholars of race and the law, but in a letter addressing her students after the killing of George Floyd, she confessed that she had struggled over what she would say to them. As a Black woman and a law school dean the first dean of color at Boston University’s School of Law and first Black woman to lead a top-20 law school Onwuachi-Willig wrote that she wondered if she
could say anything publicly, “imagining the backlash when certain words come out of my Black mouth.
“Perhaps surprising to some of you, racism regularly disempowers the seemingly powerful dean,” wrote Onwuachi-Willig, who was appointed as dean, and a professor of law, in 2018.

Clarence B. Jones, prominent Civil Rights leader and advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will receive the 2021 Thurgood Marshall Award.
In 1962, Martin Luther King wrote a letter recommending his lawyer and advisor, Clarence B. Jones, to the New York State Bar, stating: “Ever since I have known Mr. Jones, I have always seen him as a man of sound judgment, deep insights, and great dedication. I am also convinced that he is a man of great integrity” (King, 29 May 1962).
