A cold front moved in Sunday evening, prompting scattered thunderstorms and downpours over New England. Now it marks the leading edge to new, cooler, drier and fresh spring air that’s evident right out of the gate Monday.
Sunshine and comfortable air will mix with a picturesque variety of clouds. Temperatures will rise to around 70 degrees at the warmest time of day, but an onshore breeze will keep highs in the 60s near the coast. As you might expect, New England’s pollen count remains high. Oak is the latest tree pollen added to the mix, with strands of pollen that resemble short pipe cleaners and collect in large piles on the ground.

Yesterday was the warmest day of 2021 so far. Tuesday was also the warmest day since September. Today won’t be as warm with a sea breeze that will march inland with some clouds.
There won’t be as much shower or thunderstorm activity across the area this afternoon. The backdoor cold front will keep us cooler into the day on Thursday before some warmer air moves in. Download our mobile app for iOS or Android to get alerts for local breaking news and weather.
Warmer weather will be returning to close for weekend.
Saturday will be a little cool with some leftover clouds from Friday night showers and thunderstorms. Sunday, it’s possible that parts of New England could touch 90°. Temperatures will stay warm into midweek.
Something similar is happening in New England lately, and will continue through the weekend.
Each night we will cool off to the 30s and 40s north, 40s and 50s south, with relatively dry air. And each day, with the heating of the sun, our blue sky will turn rather gray with scattered afternoon showers.
It’s a simple dynamic, heating of the sun over land causes the air to rise. Rising air cools and, with enough moisture, condenses into puffy cumulus clouds.
Additionally, the relatively chilly air near the ocean tends to sink. That creates a sea breeze boundary, which also focuses surface convergence, wind from the east near the beach, wind from the west inland, which causes the clouds.
