Israel has approved plans to offer COVID-19 vaccines to Palestinians, but only those with Israeli work permits. The Palestinians have received relatively few doses to date and lag far behind Israel, which has vaccinated over one-third of its population in one of the world's fastest roll-outs.Now Israel says it will offer Moderna vaccines to the roughly 130,000 Palestinians who work in Israel or its West Bank settlements. The workers have mixed feelings:“The whole world is taking the vaccine. This a new and good step from the Israelis to vaccinate the Palestinian workers, because there is daily contact between us and the Israeli workers. So according to me, this is a very good thing, and they should take it.""It would be preferable if everyone got vaccinated, it would be preferable if everyone got vaccinated because on our side, there is a vaccine, there will be a vaccine. Without the vaccine, it will be impossible to go through checkpoints."Omar Shakir, Israel
Israel to inoculate 100,000 Palestinian workers ANI | Updated: Feb 21, 2021 11:02 IST
Tel Aviv [Israel], February 21 (ANI): Israel on Friday agreed to inoculate 100,000 Palestinians who regularly cross into Israel to work, reported The Washington Post citing Mai al-Kaila, Palestinian Health Minister.
Being able to reach 100,000 workers would mark a significant boost in the Palestinian program, according to Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila. We welcome this, al-Kaila said on Saturday. We need to vaccinate our people, so we can end the pandemic everywhere.
The agreement followed a rare meeting between Israeli and Palestinian officials Friday in Ramallah, the West Bank seat of the governing Palestinian Authority. Senior health officials from both sides, including Israel s coronavirus czar Nachman Ash, discussed efforts to control the outbreak that has killed more than 1,900 people in the territories, reported The Washington Post.
