Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Coleman was a New York Yankees second baseman who won the 1949 Rookie of the Year award, and in 1950, the World Series Most Valuable Player award.
After his playing career ended in 1957, Coleman broadcast New York Yankees, California Angels and then, for 40 years, San Diego Padres games. Coleman also had a brief, unsuccessful stint as the Padres manager.
Although Ted Williams and Coleman served in World War II and Korea, only Coleman saw active duty in both conflicts. In World War II, Williams was a stateside flying instructor, while Coleman flew Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers over the Pacific.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman found himself defending manager Aaron Boone in April following the team s 5-10 start to a campaign that hasn t yet gotten out of hand but sees the Bronx Bombers heading into Tuesday s matchup against the Los Angeles Angels losers of four straight and holding a disappointing 40-38 record.
Per Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Cashman admitted Tuesday afternoon that we suck right now but added he isn t yet ready to make a leadership change. This is not an Aaron Boone problem and this is not a coaching staff problem, Cashman explained. They’re doing what they need to do but we’re not getting the results we need. They’ve got my support. We’re in this together.
