The Brenner family performed a High Altitude Balloon launch on Jan. 10 atop the hills of Winnweiler, Germany. Despite freezing temperatures, limited on-site support, and one very complicated configuration, this local family of four successfully launched three pods into near space.
While COVID-19 social distancing rules threatened the launch date, Kaiserslautern High School’s National Technical Honor Society determined a way to adapt their plan by recruiting a single household launch crew. Michael Brenner, a junior at Kaiserslautern High School and NTHS president, together with brother Charles Brenner (KHS freshman), performed the majority of the launch. Seven new locations announced for discount grocery format
Sobeys Inc. parent Empire Company Ltd. is set to pass the halfway point in the expansion of its FreshCo discount supermarket format.
Stellarton, Nova Scotia-based Empire this week announced seven new FreshCo locations, including six in Alberta and one in northern Ontario. The Canadian food and drug retailer Company has now confirmed 37 of about 65 planned FreshCo stores in Western Canada.
In December 2017, Empire unveiled plans to convert underperforming Safeway and Sobeys supermarkets in Western Canada amounting to approximately 25% of the banners’ 255 locations in the region to FreshCo outlets over the following five years.

Empire Co. Ltd. announced the next seven locations for the expansion of its FreshCo discount banner, six in Alberta and one in northern Ontario. With this announcement, the company has now confirmed 37 of approximately 65 locations in western Canada. In December 2017, the company announced plans to convert approximately 25 percent of its Safeway and Sobeys locations to FreshCo over a five-year period. Empire is on track with the Project Horizon commitment to open 10 to 15 FreshCo stores in fiscal 2021.
“Empire’s discount network has grown 23 percent since we opened our first store in the West only two years ago,” said Mike Venton, General Manager, Discount. “We are committed to delivering market share growth through Project Horizon; Alberta is ripe with opportunity for Empire to compete with a strong discount offering. We are now more than halfway through our FreshCo expansion in western Canada.”
