Si Labs’ wireless devices support Matter end products
Today, Silicon Labs announced that wireless devices are available for the development of Matter end products that support Thread, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth protocols.
Matter, formerly named ‘Project Connected Home over IP’ or ‘CHIP’, is designed to provide interoperable, reliable, secure connectivity across IoT devices and networks.
Matter simplifies both product development and the end-user experience by providing a unified connectivity standard for a wide range of smart home and commercial applications including LED bulbs, door locks, HVAC, commercial lighting, and access control. Silicon Labs’ Matter solution enhances the connected product experience across major ecosystems including Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google.
Zigbee Alliance rebrands as ‘Connectivity Standards Alliance’, introduces ‘Matter’
The Zigbee Alliance has rebranded itself as the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).
At the same time, it revealed a second brand, ‘Matter’, to cover the project called ‘CHIP’ for Project Connected Home over IP.
“The newly developed Matter mark will serve as a seal of approval, assuring that any object built on this standard is reliable by nature, secure by design, and compatible at scale. Members of the Alliance have taken an open-source approach to the development and implementation of this new, unified connectivity protocol,” according to the Alliance, adding: “The Alliance will continue to develop Zigbee technology and will retain the Zigbee technology brand.”
Project Connected Home over IP (CHIP) the smart home partnership between Apple, Amazon, Google, and over 170 other companies has been redubbed “Matter,” according to CNET. Its logo logo shown on the accompanying graphic of smart lightbulb signifies smart-home tech that will work well with other devices.
Tobin Richardson, CEO of Matter, told
CNET that he expects the logo to become as “ubiquitous” as the Wi-Fi logo currently is.
“As these different devices become more complex networks, it’s all the more important that they’re all talking the same language,” he said. “That mark will be a helping hand to make sure that you can add whatever lightbulbs, whatever door locks, whatever you want to add.”
Project Connected Home over IP (CHIP) the ambitious smart home partnership that will see Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung, the Zigbee Alliance, and dozens of other companies work together on an open standard has gotten a new name: Matter.
The rebranding comes ahead of the first Matter certifications, which are set to arrive before the end of 2021. The new branding and logo are designed to help make it easier for customers to tell which devices work with Matter’s unified system, with the logo set to appear on future hardware products.

The goal of Matter is deceptively simple: make sure you’re able to use your smart home devices with the voice assistant (or assistants) of choice, whether that’s Apple’s Siri / HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant. At launch, Matter will run on Ethernet Wi-Fi, Thread, and Bluetooth Low Energy.
