Shreveport Police Department is down more than 100 officers

The Shreveport Police Department is down a hundred officers and the numbers are steadily declining.  The Shreveport Police Department has dwindled in size over the years. The police department currently has 479 officers and that is a 7% decrease in just four years. The Times reported SPD had 514 officers in August of 2017.  Chief Ben Raymond said in a #SaferShreveport press conference Monday afternoon that Shreveport is working under the fully allocated strength.  “We are over hundred officers down, that is to reach fully allocated strength. Now, we don’t ever get to fully allocated strength to be perfectly honest with you,” said Raymond. “We need to add 50 or 60 officers to our roster.”

Attorney General Garland visits Chicago to support federal effort to combat gun violence

A day after Chicago saw a series of mass shootings in a matter of hours, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland appeared in the city Thursday to meet with police and community leaders as the Justice Department launches new efforts to stem the flow of illegal firearms here. Garland, a native of north suburban Lincolnwood, began the day in Washington, D.C., to announce the formation of strike forces aimed at going after gun traffickers in several cities, including Chicago, at a time when urban America had seen spikes in gun violence. He then traveled to Chicago to meet with U.S. Attorney John Lausch, who will oversee the local strike force, as well as police and community leaders, officials said.
