It’s that time of the year again when we look back to the past 12 months and take out our crystal balls to divine the next 12. Of course, we’re not fortunetellers or clairvoyants but we do know a thing or two about watching market dynamics, guesstimating future movement, and having some optimism for the future. COVID-19 has clearly shaken up things, including in the mobile industry. As we try to look at what lies ahead, we might even see some of the more lasting ways the coronavirus will affect smartphones in 2021.

The Snapdragon-equipped phones that come out of Qualcomm’s partnership with Google, will receive up to four major Android updates and four years of security patches.

That said, the newly-announced partnership between Google and Qualcomm will bring Android handsets a bit closer to the level of support offered by Apple. And it is an extension of Project Treble, first launched by Google back in 2017 with the aim of cleaning up the Android update process.
Project Treble, in a nutshell, is meant to streamline processes so it s faster, easier and cheaper for phone manufacturers to push Android updates out to end-users.
And the recently announced Google and Qualcomm team-up is meant to enhance Project Treble even further, making it easier for an OEM to produce their own take on the latest version of Android.

Qualcomm and Google have announced a partnership and will work together on expanding Project Treble to bring the latest Android OS updates to more smartphones next year. Smartphones will be receiving four years of Android OS version updates and four years of security updates, starting with the Snapdragon 888 and forward. To be fair, smartphone manufacturers including Google and OnePlus promise three years of major updates to their phones and the new announcement does not promise an extra year.
