Google launches the first developer preview of Android 12 Almost exactly a year after Google announced the first developer preview of Android 11, the company today released the first developer preview of Android 12. The first Android 12 developer preview is here

Google It s mid-February, which means it s time for Google to start releasing the first developer preview of its upcoming OS update. The company s VP of engineering Dave Burke said in a blog post that with Android 12, it s investing in key areas to help deliver a polished experience and better performance. Most of today s news pertain to developers, but we can glean some clues about what new features might be coming. For instance, there will be support for more media types like AVIF for higher quality images in smaller files. Gesture navigation will be simplified and more consistent in immersive mode, which applies when you re doing things like playing a game, reading a book or watching a video. While there s still going to be the option for developers to only show the translucent navigation bar (to prevent accidental swipes when in full screen), any app that doesn t have this set will default to recognizing a swipe from the side or bottom as going back or home.
