KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) climbed four notches to be ranked at 17th and emerged as among the top 20 patent applicants listed by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) in 2020. In 2019, it was at 21st spot with seven patents. MPOB director-general Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir said the nine patents filed in 2020 had great potential for commercialisation. “We only filed for patent breakthrough technologies with high potential for commercialisation,” he said in a statement. MPOB’s nine patents filed in 2020 included a multipurpose vehicle for carrying out operations in plantations, an oil separation system in the mill, and compositions for defence from pathogen infection and its method, he said.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is in third spot in patent filings and Universiti Malaysia at fourth, based on data from the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), according to Top Glove. Last year, Top Glove’s R&D Centres filed 52 patent applications in Malaysia and 97 patent applications overseas. These were related to gloves, formers, dental dams, chemicals used in the glove industry and automation systems, which enhance product quality and improve the production efficiency.

PETALING JAYA: Ni Hsin Resources Bhd’s wholly-owned subsidiary Ni Hsin Food & Beverages Sdn Bhd (Ni Hsin F&B) has filed a patent for its new energy coffee to be marketed and retailed under the brand name “BlackBixon”. It filed a patent application with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) for its new invention, a “composition of boosting energy level, anti-fatigue and boosting mental alertness”. The company said that the purpose of filing the patent application is to protect the company’s rights to the invention and secure the competitive advantage of the company’s food and beverages business in selling products using the said invention.
