Kate Brown announced she is extending a state of emergency until at least March. “As we near 100,000 cases of COVID-19 in Oregon, and with hospitals and health care workers stretched to their limits, there is no doubt that COVID-19 continues to pose a public health threat,” she said in a statement. “These are the darkest days of this pandemic. And yet, hope has arrived. Beginning this week, each time another Oregonian is vaccinated against COVID-19, we are one step closer to the day when we can return to normal life. In the meantime, we must keep up our guard.”

Kate Brown extended the state of emergency for the COVID-19 pandemic for 60 more days on Thursday, Dec. 17, the same day that state health officials reported 1,339 additional cases and 21 more deaths from the virus. The new Dec. 17 Oregon Health Authority figures raised the total cases to 98,936 and the death toll to 1,283. The declaration is the legal underpinning for Brown s COVID-19 executive orders and the OHA s health and safety guidance. As we near 100,000 cases of COVID-19 in Oregon, and with hospitals and health care workers stretched to their limits, there is no doubt that COVID-19 continues to pose a public health threat. We continue to lose too many Oregonians to this deadly disease, including over 100 reported deaths in the last two days, Brown said.

There are 113 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, which is unchanged from Thursday. The total number of patients in hospital beds may fluctuate between report times. The numbers do not reflect admissions per day, nor the length of hospital stay. Staffing limitations are not captured in this data and may further limit bed capacity.

Register-Guard Lane remains in extreme risk category, total case count surpasses 6,000 Lane County Public Health reported 128 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 Friday, bringing the county s total to 6,028.  The county also reported one new coronavirus-related death in its daily announcement Friday, making a total of 80 residents who have died because of the virus.  Forty residents are currently hospitalized for COVID-19, down by six from Thursday s count. Nine of these individuals are in intensive care, when there were 11 people in the ICU on Thursday.. Lane County remains in the extreme risk category, and will stay there until at least Jan. 1, when county risk levels are reassigned.
