India on January 16 began its mammoth coronavirus vaccine rollout by administering 207,229 shots on the first day with the help of hundreds of thousands of health workers who were trained and assisted by the UN agencies. Roderico H Ofrin, WHO Representative in India, said, [We] provided technical assistance to the Government of India for the development of operational guidelines and other training materials for state and district programme managers and vaccinators, and establishing tracking and accountability frameworks.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on December 31 chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness at the session sites for COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. The meeting, held via video conference, was attended by Principal Secretaries (Health), NHM MDs and other health administrators of all States/UTs. The main aim of convening the officials was gearing up for the mass roll-out of the vaccines across the nation. Hence, the centre also asked all state and UT governments to conduct a ‘Dry Run’ for vaccine administration on January 2, 2021.

Just a day before the dry run of COVID-19 vaccination drive, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Friday (January 1) held a review meeting with Delhi government for the preparation of the crucial programme.
Dr Harsh Vardhan said that the main aim of the dry run is to research the minutest details in detail. At least 2 vaccines have sent their applications to Drug Controller & experts for approval, their data are being studied pro-actively, he added.
With the objective of gearing up for the rollout of COVID-19 vaccine across the country, the central government has asked all States and Union Territories to ensure effective preparedness for the vaccine rollout. Earlier today, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness at session sites for COVID-19 vaccination with Principal Secretaries (Health), National Health Mission (NHM) officials and other health administrators of all States/Union Territories (UTs) through video conference. The dry run will be conducted by all the State and UT governments on January 2, 2021, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said.
