The National Green Tribunal has formed a committee to submit a report on alleged violation of norms in the construction of a reservoir across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu in Karnataka. A bench comprising Justice K Ramakrishnan and expert member K Satyagopal issued notices to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Department of Water Resources, Central Water Commission, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments among others.

CHENNAI: The National Green Tribunal has appointed a joint committee to delve into allegations of unauthorised construction activity taking place in Mekedatu where the Karnataka government had proposed to construct a dam across the Cauvery River.
Acting on its own (
suo motu) based on a news report published on April 15 this year, a bench comprising Justice K Ramakrishnan and expert member Dr K Satyagopal directed the panel to submit a report on or before July 5.

Sendra, the annual tribal hunting festival, passed off peacefully sans any casualty of animals at Dalma wildlife sanctuary on Monday.
The forest department had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent the entry of tribals into the elephant abode. Though a few did manage to slip into the sanctuary, the foresters convinced them not to hunt animals and leave the area.
Dalma divisional forest officer Abhishek Kumar confirmed that no animals were killed and the festival was observed in a symbolic manner. We had tightened the security apparatus across the sanctuary, he added.

The meeting was informed that the Forest Department has prepared a detailed plan under Green J&K drive wherein 5 lakh plants each have been kept for plantation in smart cities of Jammu and Srinagar. The department will plant these saplings in the identified areas and will also provide saplings to various other agencies for plantation in the earmarked areas under the Mission. Besides, the Social Forestry Department will also be contributing in this plantation drive especially in institutions.
Regarding progress achieved in the month of April under CAPEX, CAMPA and other CSS schemes, It was informed that the actual planting season starts in the month of July in Jammu region and November in Kashmir region. Besides, at present all the forest divisions are all set for the plantation drive and sufficient plants have already been raised and being maintained in the government nurseries besides e-tendering for works, procurement of materials is also going on in full swing. The
