Published: 11 July 2021 Simpson Bay: - Low-fare carrier Frontier Airlines officially launched its first route network with non-stop flights to St. Maarten from Miami and Orlando, Florida at the Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on Saturday, July 10, 2021. The air service will embark on weekly flights on Saturdays using an Airbus 320 with a seating capacity of 186. This venture serves as a part of Frontier’s growing network out of South Florida. Minister of Tourism Ludmila de Weever stated, “Today marks another celebration for St. Maarten as we welcome two Frontier Airlines flights from Florida. More than 300 passengers arrived from Miami and Orlando, Florida on an affordable flight. For that, we are forever grateful for all the hard work done by the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau and the collective team at the airport from the management of PJIAE to the baggage handlers. St. Maarten welcomes you with pleasure to our safe and friendly island.”

Published: 08 July 2021 PHILIPSBURG (DCOMM): -The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) said on Thursday that five named storm systems have formed up to July 7th including the first hurricane, Elsa. Elsa passed through the Caribbean last week causing considerable damage to some islands. On Thursday, the Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Weather & Climate Research released its third Atlantic seasonal hurricane activity forecast and has increased its forecast slightly and they continue to forecast an above-average 2021 season. CSU says that: “Elsa’s development and intensification into a hurricane in the tropical Atlantic also typically portends an active season. We anticipate an above-normal probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean.”

Published: 08 July 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - As of July 8th, there was one (1) person who tested positive for COVID-19; however eleven (11) persons have recovered; bringing the total active cases to seventeen (17). The total number of confirmed cases is two thousand six hundred thirty-three (2633). The Collective Prevention Services (CPS) are monitoring fifteen (15) people in home isolation. Two (2) patients remain hospitalized at the St. Maarten Medical Center. The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains at thirty-four (34). The number of people recovered since the first case surfaced on St. Maarten remains at two thousand five hundred eighty-two (2582). Twenty-six (26) people are in quarantine based on contact tracing investigations carried out by CPS.
