When he was a suitor for the then Princess Elizabeth, much was made of Prince Philip of Greece and Denmarkâs âforeignâ-ness. Despite growing up in England and being schooled in Scotland at Gordonstoun, Philip was still seen as an outsider in some circles, leading to the decision to naturalise him as a British citizen ahead of the Royal Wedding, removing his Greek and Danish titles. Yet as well as his Danish heritage (his family had inherited the Greek throne but were not actually Greeks), he was also German through his motherâs side, as Princess Alice of Battenberg was a Hessian Princess.
He also shared memories of Philip and how he will be remembered saying: “Prince Philip did not like to dwell on things: he was a doer, with great vigour and energy. It has been said that the life of the dead is placed into the memory of the living, and this will be compellingly true of the memories of our time spent with him – the hilarity, the stories, the seemingly limitless interests – will always be treasured.”
His wife, Crown Princess Marie Chantal, said: “We were all saddened to hear the news this morning of the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, born Prince of Greece. Steadfast and loyal, he served the Crown with selfless devotion and leaves behind an amazing legacy. He will be missed.”
