Parks Canada notifies residents of prescribed fire in southwest corner of Prince Albert National Park

Prince Albert Daily Herald A map of the prescribed fire location in Prince Albert National Park provided by Parks Canada. Parks Canada says residents in the Sturgeon River Valley may experience smoky conditions due to a prescribed fire in the southwest corner of Prince Albert National Park. Park officials say up to 80 hectares may be burned if the required spring weather and environment conditions are met. The fire is part of a multi-year restoration project to rejuvenate forested areas, expand and restore grasslands, and increase bison habitat. “After the fire, the area will be monitored and suppression actions taken as required until the fire is classified as extinguished,” reads a Parks Canada press release sent out on Wednesday. “Neighbouring residents may experience some smoky conditions in the evening due to smoke travelling out of the prescribed fire unit.”

Parks Canada is currently conducting a prescribed fire at the park with potentially 80 hectares being burned for restoration purposes. “The Paskwâw-Mostos prescribed fire plays a key role in multi-year restoration projects to rejuvenate forested areas, expand and restore grasslands and increase bison habitat,” stated Parks Canada in the media release. Following the burn, the area will be monitored and any fire suppression work will be done until the fire is extinguished. –

Prescribed fires play a key role in multi-year restoration projects to rejuvenate forested areas, bison habitat and restore grasslands, says the release.

Wild bison in Prince Albert National Park see signs of growth after years of population decline

PRINCE ALBERT One of the last free-roaming plains bison herds in Canada is seeing signs of renewal after over a decade of population decline. The Sturgeon River Plains Bison Herd roams on the southwest side of Prince Albert National Park. The park has adjusted its monitoring methods over the years and has settled on observation to determine estimated populations every year, according to wildlife ecologist Digit Guedo. She said this year’s aerial survey and counts from people on the land show a minimum population of 98 bison, but the herd is likely sitting at around 120 animals – that’s up from an aerial survey in 2016, which showed a minimum of 58 bison.
