A Holiday Helping Hand: Prince William Police collect thousands of dollars in gift cards to give foster kids

WASHINGTON The coronavirus has had a major impact on the holiday season, but that did not stop one local police department that worked to provide money for members of its community.
The Prince William County Police Department collected gift cards for roughly 120 children and young adults in the local foster care system this 2020 holiday season.
The police department partnered in the project with the Prince William Department of Social Services [DSS].

DANVILLE â Mahoning Police Chief Fred Dyroff introduced newly installed detective Jason Bedisky to the board of supervisors at Monday evening s meeting.
In a short formal ceremony as the meeting began, Dyroff gave Bedisky his detective badge.
Bedisky thanked the board and Chief Dyroff, for coming up with the idea of having a detective in the police department. And he thanked the board for approving of the position.
Dyroff had suggested to the board the idea of having such a position in the department without having to hire another officer. His suggestion was to hire from within his department. Prince William County Commonwealthâs Attorney Amy Ashworth has found the police departmentâs use of deadly force in the Dec. 10 shooting of a 79-year-old Dumfries-area man as âboth justified and reasonable.â
According to an investigation conducted by her office, the five officers involved faced âimminent bodily harmâ as Kurtis Kay Frevert âraised his gun at the officers while walking towards them and saying, âshoot me.ââ
The Prince William County Police Department on Monday morning released the names of the officers involved and a detailed timeline of what happened that night.
Officers were called to Secret Grove Court in the Four Seasons community off Va. 234 at 7:14 p.m. after Frevertâs wife reported her husband was suicidal, making concerning statements and armed with a handgun.

The police department released the findings of its criminal investigation on Monday.
The shooting happened Dec. 10, after officers were dispatched to the Four Seasons retirement community on Secret Grove Court in Dumfries, Virginia, around 7:15 p.m. A woman called 911 saying her husband was armed and suicidal.
Before police arrived, the man left the home on foot with a handgun and was believed to be in a nearby wooded area, according to investigators.
A police helicopter reported that the man was walking back to the home. Officers then found him on the front porch holding the gun. According to the investigation, police told him to drop the weapon, but within seconds, he pointed the gun toward the officers, five of whom shot the man multiple times.
