X Like many Houstonians still experiencing unemployment related to the pandemic, Ben Abell is having a difficult year. First, he lost his job in oil and gas. Then he and his partner split up, and he had to move out. He s optimistic about finding a new job. And for now, he s couch surfing. I got demoted from full-time to part-time, which they explicitly told me was not performance-related, and I understood. It was what it was. The work slowed down,” Abell said. “And then from there, it just dried up.”

Austin-Travis County extend eviction protections until February 1 By FOX 7 Austin Digital Team Published  Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Andy Brown signed the orders Dec. 17.  We know the efforts taken by the City of Austin and Travis County to protect tenants from eviction during this pandemic are working to keep our community more safe, said Brown in a release. The federal ban on evictions expires in January. For millions that s when huge problems start. Millions of U.S. renters face the prospect of eviction in January unless federal officials extend protections put in place during the Covid-19 pandemic. That month is when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s ban on evictions is set to expire. The CDC ordered the halt on evictions under the Public Health Service Act, which allows the federal government to enact regulations that help stop the spread of infectious diseases.

Eviction relief proposed in Denton as federal moratorium set to expire on Dec 31

Denton City Council member Deb Armintor has proposed a relief package that would prohibit landlords from posting notices to vacate to tenants — a legal prerequisite in the eviction process — and subsequent measures designed to preempt what she feels would become a crisis here after the federal moratorium on evictions expires on Dec. 31. In a procedural move on Thursday, when she and other council members are scheduled to meet, she will ask her colleagues for a one-minute emergency proposal on what she calls LEEP, or Local Emergency Eviction Prohibition. Council members, in such a scenario, are given a minute to explain why the other council members should consider discussing the item. If a consensus is reached — a majority of the seven-member council — debate would begin on the item.
