Since scientists first demonstrated nuclear power 70 years ago, the second stage of nuclear power has remained just beyond our fingertips: nuclear fusion power. While promising, the ETA on the technology required to develop and build viable nuclear fusion has remained decades away.
Until now. Probably.
A company claims to have hit a critical milestone in the development of a new technology capable of generating power from nuclear fusion, according to a recent press release.
Called TAE Technologies, the fusion energy developer claimed its reactors might generate energy at commercial scales by the end of the 2020s using a novel ability to produce stable plasma at temperatures topping 50 million degrees Celsius. For comparison, this is more than twice the temperature of the core of the sun!
At least, that’s how Gov. Phil Murphy described it when he was candidate Phil Murphy.
Getting there isn’t as simple.
So said Andrew Zwicker, who doubles as both a physicist and a professor at the famed Princeton Plasma Physics Lab and an assemblyman representing the 16
th District.
To coincidence with the release of the first-ever ROI Influencers: Technology list, we asked Zwicker if Murphy’s push to have New Jersey reclaim its global reputation is resonating in the science community.
“I would say, ‘We’re getting there,’” he said.
That’s hardly a precise, scientific answer, but Zwicker said the question is not easily answered.

Four Johns Hopkins University students have been awarded Goldwater Scholarships for their research and achievements in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Juniors Bruce Enzmann, Min Jae Kim, Shiker Nair, and Aaditya Ra are among a cohort of 410 Goldwater Scholars selected for 2021–22 from an estimated pool of more than 5,000 applicants. Moderna vaccine still effective after six months
Moderna says its vaccine against the coronavirus (COVID-19) has been shown to be 90 percent effective against all variants of the disease after six months. Results show that it also protects 95 percent of patients against severe forms of COVID-19.
