The Army’s chief of staff said the service’s investments in a suite of new long-range precision fires can play a critical role supporting future operations in the Indo-Pacific, aligning with recent details of the new Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI) that calls for such a capability.
Gen. James McConville told reporters Thursday the long-range fires ability to penetrate adversaries’ Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) capabilities will open up more options for the Air Force and Navy as officials assess operational and funding needs for future INDOPACOM requirements.

By building new Multi-Domain Task Force units armed with long-range missiles, “what we want to do as a service is provide the combatant commander…multiple options,” the Army Chief of Staff, Gen. James McConville, told the Defense Writers Group on Thursday.
“A wider base of long-range precision fires… enabled by all our terrestrial forces not just sea and air but by land forces as well is critically important to stabilizing what is becoming a more unstable environment in the western Pacific,” Davidson told Sen. Tom Cotton. “Long-range precision fires delivered by the ground force, I think, are critically important.”

WASHINGTON: The Air Force Chief of Staff is calling on the Pentagon leadership to launch a targeted roles and missions review of the key functional areas of future All Domain Operations detailed in the impending Joint Warfighting Concept.
“I wouldn’t actually go through a complete roles and missions [review],” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown told the Defense Writers Group. “But I do think, as we as we go into the Joint Warfighting Concept and we look at gaps and seams and overlaps in capability, this is what the discussion has to occur on with [respect to] roles and missions.”
