Mayor Lester Miller, GFB Director of Public Relations & Information Kenny Burgamy, and Brookdale Warming Center Director Steve Bell announced a donation of $5,000 from the Georgia Farm Bureau.  The funds will be used to directly support the individual needs of its residents. With Georgia Farm Bureau’s home office located in Macon-Bibb County since the 1940’s, and serving as the fourth largest employer here, it consistently looks for opportunities to help improve and support the needs in the community.

He says his administration’s work is far from over. Within a few days of taking office, his administration opened the Brookdale Warming Center. It came after two homeless men froze to death on Christmas night. The center started with just three people on the first day, to about ten people staying the first weekend. “Now we have over 100 people that we’re able to have 24/7, they get fed three times a day, have a warm place to stay and now we’re starting with some counseling service and case managers are there taking care of their needs,” said Miller.

MACON, Georgia(41NBC/WMGT) The Brookdale Warming Center has been open for nearly two weeks, and they have helped more than 50 people. Now the organization needs volunteers. Steve Bell the director of the center says they have plenty of donations, but they need volunteers.  Bells says volunteers help sort out items the shelter receives. They also help sign people in. The center received help from the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Monday. The fraternity helped sort out items and also fed those staying at the shelter.

Macon Transit provides rides to Brookdale Warming Center Listen to the content of this post: MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) The Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority joined multiple community agencies to provide people a warm and safe place to stay at the Brookdale Warming Center. This is according to a Macon-Bibb County news release. MTA will offer free rides to the center from the Historic Macon Terminal Station for anyone who has a pass provided by local support organizations. Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller said, “There hasn’t been one organization that has said ‘no’ to help make the Brookdale Warming Center possible, and that speaks very highly of our community. One of our conversations from the beginning of putting this together was about getting people there, and I want to thank the Transit Authority for providing these rides.”
