Alleged gang member arrested for killing toddler in random shooting
A New York man has been charged with the murder of a one-year-old as part of a sweeping 63-count indictment against 18 alleged gang members.
Dashawn Austin, 25, is alleged to have opened fire into a crowded cookout in the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant in July last year.
His alleged gunshots wounded three people and killed 22-month-old Davell Gardner, who had been sitting in a stroller at the time.

Two men were charged Thursday in the connection with the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old boy in New York City last year, according to a news release from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
The baby, identified as Davell Gardner, was killed last July on the sidewalk in front of Brooklyn’s Raymond Bush Playground.
Less than a year after that shooting, Dashawn Austin, 25, and Akeem Artis, 24, were arrested and charged in connection with the shooting and Davell’s death. Both men are members of a local street gang called the Hoolies and the violence was motivated by gang rivalry and retaliation, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez’s office.

A Borough Park firebrand and New York City Council candidate pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of “inciting to riot” for whipping up a crowd that attacked a Hasidic journalist last fall during a protest against coronavirus restrictions that morphed into a pro-Trump rally.
During a virtual hearing, the candidate, Heshy Tischler admitted that he egged on a crowd against the journalist, Jacob Kornbluh, who was working for Jewish Insider at the time and now is the Forward’s senior political reporter.
“I welcome the fact that Mr. Tischler acknowledged in the court of law that he incited a riot against me and has been held accountable for his actions,” Kornbluh said afterward. “I am looking forward to continuing my work in journalism undeterred.”
