Synopsis
Aimed at relieving the pressure on crematoriums and burial grounds, Karnataka government on Wednesday had permitted cremation or burial of bodies of COVID-19 victims at the land or farm house owned by the family members or relatives of the deceased, by strictly adhering to the guidelines.

Priya S. (name changed), a resident of Banaswadi, recalled the helplessness of trying to find an ICU bed for her husband whose oxygen saturation levels were dropping at alarming levels due to COVID-19.
As they rode in the ambulance knocking on the doors of hospitals, her husband’s oxygen saturation levels dropped to 54. “I did call the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) helpline and there were no ICU beds available in the government quota. So, I took him in an ambulance and went searching for a bed. The ordeal lasted three hours,” she said.

W ith over 100 covid-19 deaths reported in
Bengaluru on Tuesday, volunteers,
ambulance drivers, staff allotted for cremations and burials of the deceased had to wait for hours at
crematoriums for the last rites to be done. On Tuesday, over 30
bodies were queued up at each of the crematoriums allotted for
covid cremations.
Over the last week, the toll in Bengaluru has been spiking. Volunteers say that there are also covid patients dying at home, which are also being accounted for by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

With nearly no progress for months, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to terminate the tender for the Ejipura elevated corridor. The civic body will be floating a fresh tender to complete the 2.5-km elevated corridor.
