Breckenridge Ski Resort opens Peak 6 terrain

Photo from Vail Resorts Breckenridge Ski Resort opened inbounds terrain on Peak 6 on Friday, Jan. 29. The opening of terrain on Peak 6 brings skiing and riding to all five of the resort’s inbounds peaks for the first time this winter. It’s also the first true high-Alpine skiing and riding experience guests can access inbounds at the resort. Vail Resorts spokeswoman Sara Lococo said the majority of Peak 6’s intermediate terrain is now open, as well as the Intuition run and hike-to terrain in Beyond Bowl. Lococo described the effort to open Peak 6 this weekend as “huge” for the resort’s grooming, patrol, lift and mountain operations teams.

Summit photographers share tips for taking great photos

Photo by Denise Thatcher Arguably one of the best things about Summit County is its natural beauty. From Hoosier Pass in the south to Ute Pass in the north, between the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels to the east and Vail Pass to the west and in most parts in between, you’re more likely to find a spectacular vista than an ordinary one. With all of the mountain scenery to be had, the more daunting challenge for visitors often can be taking a photo that adequately encapsulates the feeling of what it was like to witness the view firsthand. Some people might prefer to take home a professional image from a local gallery, but for those who are inclined to share their own vacation snaps, some local photographers have a few hints to share.

How to plan a small dream wedding in Summit County

Photo from Getty Images Weddings have changed. Before the pandemic hit in March, weddings were the ultimate large gathering. They were an excuse to bring the old and the young together to celebrate love and tradition. Now, weddings look much different, but that doesn’t mean the charm isn’t there anymore. Couples who decided not to postpone their wedding amid the pandemic are now reimagining their big day to be a little smaller. “Many couples have decided to do smaller, more intimate weddings,” said Christine Ashburn, owner of The Soiree Studio. “As long as they’re able to still have their wedding in the county in which it’s taking place and make it happen with current government regulations, they don’t want to wait. They want to celebrate their love.”

Summit County ski mountaineers start up competitive season

Photo from Jaime Brede The inaugural ski mountaineering season for Team Summit and head coach Jaime Brede has focused primarily on training, but the team hopes to head to its first in-person competition next month. Brede and Team Summit ski mountaineers Olivia Lyman and Delilah Staberg have trained weekly on Copper Mountain Resort’s new designated uphill routes. The endurance training, interval training and ski mountaineering fundamentals such as bootpacking, downhill skiing on skinny skis and transitions led up to Lyman and Staberg’s first race of the season the virtual Arapahoe Basin Ski Area Rise and Shine Rando series. On an unmarked course where they recorded their personal times via the Strava application, Staberg (1 hour, 41 minutes and 46 seconds) and Lyman (1:41:47) finished third and fourth in the nine-skier women’s race behind winner Kate Chapman (1:18:57) and runner-up Katherine Sigerst (1:40:12).

Decent snowfall to start Aspen s ski season yields to dry first half of January

Leftover snow sits on the edges of Aspen Pie Shop on the walking mall in Aspen on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021. (Kelsey Brunner/The Aspen Times) This weekend is supposed to bring snow to the Aspen area after a very dry start to January. It will be welcomed relief to anyone who straps on boards. Aspen Mountain and Snowmass racked up decent snowfall amounts in November and December but Mother Nature closed the spigot in January. Snowmass recorded only 5 inches of snowfall in January through Tuesday while Aspen Mountain managed only 3 inches, according to Aspen Skiing Co. From Nov. 1 through Jan. 19, Snowmass received 99 inches of snow while Aspen Mountain scored 83 inches, according to Jeff Hanle, Skico vice president of communications.
