This comprehensive civil rights law prohibits employment discrimination, mandates equal access to state and local services and supports, prohibits private places of public accommodations from discriminating against individuals with disabilities, and enforces access to telecommunications and the Internet. The ADA paved the way for equality for people with disabilities. Shouldn’t we have access to the pavement we walk on? Before this dreaded pandemic, my wife of 28 years asked why I no longer rode my wheelchair alongside hers to the local grocery store or to any other place for that matter. My response was based on various factors including muscle weakness caused by Spinal Muscle Atrophy Type II, the inability to cross the intersection within the time allotted, and the cracked and uneven sidewalks and streets.
