Last week, a tweet from Guardian journalist Alexandra Topping went viral. The reason? It resonated with such a huge number of angry parents. It read: “I know a pregnant primary school teacher who is giving up her job for a flexible admin role because her wages won t cover childcare costs of 2 children under-3. Why do we just accept that in this country? Seriously - we can revolt for football, but we just shrug at this bullshit?”

Two weeks ago, my daughter Mary turned one. We marked her birthday with family. She’s a happy baby and it was a lovely day, but it was impossible not to think about the one person who should have been there, her mother, for whom she was named but never met.
This time last year, my world turned upside down. My wife, Mary Agyapong, a nurse at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, died on Easter Sunday. She’d contracted Covid and was admitted after suffering from shortness of breath, but was discharged. Two days later she was readmitted and surgeons delivered our baby by emergency C-section. She was transferred to the intensive care unit and died five days later.

Five pregnant women wearing “I Am Mary” T-shirts in memory of the nurse Mary Agyapong protested in Parliament Square on Wednesday after figures revealed nearly 1,000 pregnant NHS staff were still working in patient-facing roles.
Despite evidence revealing that pregnant women may be at an increased risk of severe disease and losing their baby if they contract Covid, 984 pregnant staff in 25 trusts across the UK continue to work in frontline roles, a request under freedom of information laws by the campaign group Pregnant Then Screwed has revealed.
The UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has given the green light for pregnant women in the UK to receive the Pfizer or Moderna Covid vaccine after data from the US showed about 90,000 pregnant women had been vaccinated without any safety concerns.
