Historical Society s new space officially opened

Date Time Historical Society’s new space officially opened The new extension to the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society’s museum, located on the site of Wonthaggi’s railway station in Apex Park, was officially opened on Wednesday. The extension, dubbed ‘The West Wing’, includes administration and storage facilities, an accessible toilet and kitchenette, a new passage with a direct link to the original station building and energy efficient lighting throughout. Bass Coast Shire Council contributed $200,000 to the project, while the Historical Society provided in-kind support, as well as a contribution of around $80,000. Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said this project is a perfect example of staying the course, planning well and achieving together.

Gas project put on back burner

Date Time Gas project put on back burner Bass Coast Shire Council welcomes the State Government’s recent decision to rule out AGL’s proposed gas import terminal and pipeline project for Crib Point. Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, found that the project would cause unacceptable impacts on the marine environment in Western Port, an important Ramsar Wetland of international significance. At its March 2020 Council Meeting, Council resolved to declare its opposition to the development of fossil fuel assets on Western Port and in particular, to AGL’s proposed Gas Import Jetty project for Crib Point. Council made a submission against the project to the Independent Inquiry and Advisory Committee, stating that the proposal presented substantial risk to the unique environment of Western Port, its diverse habitats, including mangroves, saltmarshes, seagrasses and important migratory shorebirds.

Arts Centre revamp underway

Date Time Arts Centre revamp underway Work has started to renew the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre’s ‘back of house’ area. Opened in 1982, the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre holds a great deal of historical significance to the town and will welcome further improvements to the much loved venue The ‘back of house’ area includes male and female dressing rooms, kitchen space, male and female and accessible toilets and a Green Room. The renewal works will include new flooring and joinery in the dressing rooms and laundry, the installation of a new kitchen and appliances, , painting, and the installation of efficient lighting and plumbing.
