The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce is getting ready to open the gates to the Humboldt Historic Campground.
The campground is set to open on May 21, back to the tradition of opening on the Friday before the May long weekend.
“Last year we weren’t even allowed to open until July 1,” said Chamber executive director Brent Fitzpatrick. “So this year is much better.”
Fitzpatrick added that the late opening last year hurt the financial aspect a bit, but they’re excited to get back to a normal opening.
As they prepare for the opening, Fitzpatrick said they’ve cut down a couple dozen trees in the park, and they’re preparing to welcome their summer students who will help with some painting and the final cleanup before things get rolling for the season.
“What I’ve noticed is a lot of businesses have looked to the virtual world and said, ‘This is where we need to go,’” Fitzpatrick said. “This means looking at your business and saying, ‘Are we accessible online?’ ‘Can people find me online?’ ‘Can they do the business online then we arrange delivery, curbside or walk-in pickup?’ They’ve really had to look at how they can carry out the business virtually.” Despite the reopening plans, Fitzpatrick said that being able to offer online sales is part of the tools a business owner needs in their bag to run a business into the future.

The roadmap to reopening that was released by the provincial government is getting a seal of approval from the local business community.
Step one of the reopening plan could be reached by the end of the month, if COVID-19 vaccination numbers continue to steadily climb.
The Humboldt and District Chamber Executive Director Brent Fitzpatrick said the provincial government is essentially leaving the responsibility in the hands of the public.
“I think that is a wonderful way to put it because the onus is on all of us to try and get through this thing and get back to normal,” Fitzpatrick said. “If all we have to do is be cognizant and obedient of guidelines and then get vaccinated that seems pretty simple.”
