Published February 4, 2021, 1:41 PM The House Committee on Trade and Industry on Thursday approved proposals updating the ‘antiquated’ Consumer Act of the Philippines in order to give consumers ample protection from deceitful, abusive and dishonest trade practices amid the continued rise in goods and services in the country. John Reynald Tiangco agreed to adopt the technical working group recommendation to consolidate seven bills that are aimed at  putting more teeth to existing consumer protection laws, as well as introducing new provisions that that would impose heavy penalties on deceiving and abusive schemes against consumers with the use of modern technology.

House panel touts making drag racing a criminal offense

Published January 29, 2021, 10:38 PM The House Committee on Transportation has endorsed for plenary approval  the bill proposing to make drag racing conducted in public roads a criminal offense. The House panel on Thursday approved the technical working group report endorsing immediate referral to the House plenary of House Bill 3391.Authored by Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito-Castelo, HB 3391 proposes to impose penalties on drivers of vehicles caught engaged in racing using public roads. Castelo said HB 3391 aims to keep public roads safe for both motorists and commuters. The neophyte lawmaker urged the House leadership to immediately schedule the measure for plenary debate, saying that she has full confidence that transportation panel chairman and Samar Rep. Edgar Mary Sarmiento will successfully defend  the passage of the measure.

(Photo by ERNESTO BENAVIDES / AFP / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) The House Assistant Majority Leader filed House Resolution No. 1479, pressing on the need for the DOH to prescribe such system as the government is expected to roll out its vaccination plan by next month.    She noted the COVID-19 vaccines that have been rolled out require two doses delivered in two separate dates with a certain interval so that the vaccine will achieve its full efficacy.    “For instance, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires a three week-interval between the two doses, while for the Moderna vaccine, the interval shall be four weeks,” she said.
