House Democrats moved to increase the amount of stimulus checks after the outgoing Republican president on Tuesday threatened to veto a US $900 billion Covid-19 relief package unless lawmakers raise the stimulus checks for individuals from US $600 to US $2,000, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday. The US House of Representatives and Senate both approved the relief package late Monday, along with US $1.4 trillion dollars in government funding for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends on September 30, 2021, sending the giant spending bill to the president to sign into law.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye said that resolving the conflict with Israel must be within an international framework and based on international law. Ishtaye made the remarks on Wednesday following a meeting here with outgoing UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Nickolay Mladenov, Xinhua news agency. The Prime Minister said that resolving the conflict with Israel should be within the Quartet on the Middle East. The Quartet comprises the US, the UN, Russia, and the European Union. It was found in 2002 to facilitate the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The UnN is the international body that ensures the implementation of the international law and the international resolutions related to the conflict with Israel, Ishtaye said.
