Twenty-two killed in attack on Aden airport after new Yemen cabinet lands

4 Min Read ADEN (Reuters) -At least 22 people were killed and dozens wounded in an attack on Aden airport on Wednesday, moments after a plane landed carrying a newly formed Saudi-backed cabinet for government-held parts of Yemen. Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik said all members of the cabinet were “fine”. But the attack underlined the difficulties facing a government intended by Saudi Arabia to unite two of its allies in the war against the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Hours after the attack, a second explosion was heard around Aden’s Maasheq presidential palace where the cabinet members including Maeen, as well as the Saudi ambassador to Yemen, Mohammad Said al-Jaber, had been taken to safety, residents and local media said.

US designation of Houthis as terrorists: A wrong move at a wrong time

As the lights were about to go out on Trump presidency, the outgoing US administration made two major announcements about the Middle East terming Iran a home for Al Qaeda, and designating the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen as terrorists . Both of these moves reek of desperation and miscalculation. While these can have dangerous consequences for both the US and Middle East, the branding of the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) in particular effectively barring US citizens and entities from interacting financially with the group is certain to unleash unspeakable horrors on the millions of Yemenis living on the edge of life and death.

It only illustrates that there is so much work to be done by this nascent new government  - not only ending violence and providing security, but restoring services and building trust among the population under its control.
