The mayor of the southeastern Armenian town of Goris was arrested early on Monday just hours after urging local residents to block a highway and not allow Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian to visit their region bordering Azerbaijan.
The 29-year-old mayor, Arush Arushanian, was among the elected heads of more than a dozen communities in Syunik province who demanded Pashinian’s resignation earlier this month. They held him responsible for the Armenian side’s defeat in the recent war in Nagorno-Karabakh and accused him of putting Syunik’s security at grave risk with Armenian troop withdrawals completed over the weekend.
Pashinian planned to visit the region on Monday in a bid to reassure its population.

Amid continuing opposition protests in Yerevan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian on Tuesday insisted that he still enjoys popular support and that his resignation is primarily sought by Armenia’s “elite” overthrown by him in 2018.
Pashinian claimed that opposition and other groups trying to topple him in the aftermath of the war in Nagorno-Karabakh are pitting themselves against “the people.”
“The ‘elite’ that lost power in Armenia as a result of the 2018 revolution is trying to take revenge,” he wrote on Facebook. “And we are talking about not only the political elite but also all those who had privileges until 2018 and have not had them since 2018.”
President Armen Sarkissian chairs a meeting of the Hayastan All-Armenia Fund board in 2018
YEREVAN (Azatutyun.am) President Armen Sarkissian has still not received a financial report on the use of $100 million raised by a pan-Armenian charity for Nagorno-Karabakh and controversially donated to Armenia’s government.
The Hayastan All-Armenian Fund launched an international fundraising campaign immediately after the outbreak of the war in Karabakh on September 27. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians from around the world responded to its appeal for urgent aid to Karabakh and its population, donating roughly $170 million within weeks.
The charity headquartered in Yerevan redirected more than $100 million of those proceeds to the government. The Armenian Finance Ministry said on November 24 that the sum will finance the government’s “infrastructure, social and healthcare expenditures” necessitated by the six-week war.

All flags on public buildings across the country were lowered to half-mast and memorial services will be held in all Armenian churches on Sunday to pay tribute to victims of the six-week war during which the Armenian side suffered massive territorial losses in and around Karabakh.
