Asuncion, May 21 : The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said on Thursday that Colombia will no longer co-host this year s Copa America amid civil unrest and surging coronavirus cases. Colombia had been scheduled to host fixtures in four cities, and the final was earmarked for Barranquilla s Estadio Metropolitano on July 10. CONMEBOL guarantees the realization of the 2021 Copa America and in the coming days will inform where the games originally allocated to Colombia will be played, COMEBOL said in a statement, Xinhua reports.
The announcement came just hours after Colombian sports minister Ernesto Lucena asked CONMEBOL to postpone the tournament until local coronavirus restrictions were eased to allow fans into stadia.
Argentina suspend football season due to COVID weeks before hosting Copa America
By The Athletic Staff Comments
Argentina have suspended their domestic football season just weeks before the nation part-hosts the Copa America.
The competition, which is due to kick-off on June 13, is scheduled to include a significant number of games in Argentina. On Thursday, it was revealed that Colombia had been stripped of their right to co-host the tournament.
But on Friday it emerged that due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and new measures the domestic season would be suspended in Argentina until at least May 30. There is no indication, as it stands, as to what impact this would have on the Copa America.
Buenos Aires, Argentina Aldana Ramos recalls a moment early in the coronavirus pandemic when she thought she would have to give up her schooling. The 19-year-old resident of the low-income barrio of Villa Soldati was juggling two education programmes taking university courses for medical school in the morning and then studying to be a nurse in the afternoon.
But it was the demand of classrooms thrust entirely into the virtual space that made things more difficult. With no internet at home, and only one cell phone that she shared with her younger brother to log on and complete assignments, it seemed almost impossible to keep up.
