Costa Rica to vaccinate 3.5 million inhabitants against Covid-19

I want to talk to you about Covid-19 vaccination, which is one of the country´s key missions. That´s why we are conducting an accelerated and massive plan to vaccinate at least 3.5 million people this year, Alvarado wrote and published on social media.
The president specified the project includes direct action by the State and support by private sector and civil society organizations.
President Carlos Alvarado on Tuesday delivered the State of the Republic, an annual rendering of accounts before the Legislative Assembly and the Costa Rican public.
“That in every corner of our country there are quality opportunities for all people, without any distinction. And that on this common basis of opportunities each person exercise their freedom to build their path according to their wishes, dreams, efforts and talents. That is the great common project called Costa Rica,” Alvarado began.
The lengthy speech highlighted the government’s efforts to safeguard lives during the pandemic and its goal to generate more employment. Alvarado also celebrated infrastructure improvements during his presidency and his dreams of a more equitable Costa Rica.
International Workers’ Day was celebrated throughout much of the world on Saturday, May 1. Costa Rica is observing the holiday today, Monday, as part of an effort to create more long weekends and boost domestic tourism.
“This is a very different Labor Day, [as] we are going through a difficult situation,” said President Carlos Alvarado on Saturday. “That is why today I am deeply grateful to all the women and men who work tirelessly in the front line of response to COVID-19. Let’s help them, taking care of each other. United, we will move forward!”
International Workers’ Day is a mandatory pay holiday in Costa Rica. Regardless of their type of employment (e.g. full-time, part-time, seasonal), all workers have the right to the holiday. As such, most businesses will be closed across Costa Rica today.
Costa Rica on Wednesday set a record for daily new coronavirus cases, with 2,434 infections identified, according to the Health Ministry’s evening update.
Eight-hundred and eighteen people are hospitalized with Covid-19, also a new high. Of those, a record 351 are in intensive care, saturating capacity at some public hospitals.
Of patients currently in the ICU with Covid-19, more than three-quarters are less than 70 years old, La Nación reports, indicating a trend of younger adults requiring hospitalization.
“2,434 cases due to COVID-9, 818 hospitalizations and 351 in ICU. The situation is serious,” said President Carlos Alvarado via Twitter. “Let’s keep the protocols and comply with the measures. This includes reducing mobility and moving only for the essentials. Let’s protect ourselves and help avoid overloading the health system.”
