Colombia’s Constitutional Court on Friday granted 16 congressional seats to war-torn regions, a promise made to victims that Congress initially refused to honor.
The court overruled a controversial 2017 decision by former Senate President Efrain Cepeda (Conservative Party) who claimed that a decision to grant victims political participation lacked votes.
The court ruling claimed that Cepeda violated the “good faith” principle of a 2016 peace agreement between former President Juan Manuel Santos and now-defunct FARC guerrillas.
The decision is a major victory for conflict victims from historically neglected regions and Senator Roy Barreras (U Party) who challenged the former senate president’s decision in court.

Protests against the government have lasted until the fourth week in Colombia, when groups of students, unions and others took to the streets on Wednesday to demand social change again, amid talks between the government and strike leaders.
About 8,000 people went to the protests in the capital, Bogota, the mayor said.
“We are helping our young people, our children, our grandchildren, who have been struggling for so long despite the lack of opportunities,” 68-year-old lawyer Roberto Hermida told Reuters news agency.
