2 seats up for grabs on Killeen school board

The Killeen Independent School board of trustees holds the ultimate decision-making authority for a district charged with educating some 45,000 students, many of whom are military affiliated. In two short weeks, the school board could find itself with two new voices of influence if voters show up to the polls in the upcoming May 1 election. Four people are running for two seats on the KISD board of trustees. Lan Carter is running against incumbent board President JoAnn Purser for the Place 7 school board seat. Riakos “Rock” Adams is taking on Cullen Mills for the Place 6 seat, currently held by board member Minerva Trujillo, who is not running for reelection.

Killeen school board expands number of meetings per month

The Killeen Independent School District board of trustees approved the addition of a third monthly meeting Tuesday evening. In a 7-0 vote, the Killeen ISD board voted to approve the addition of a monthly morning workshop meeting to be held in between the two regular evening meetings already on the books. “The meeting will still provide the opportunity for public forum,” KISD Superintendent John Craft said. “It provides a little bit more flexibility, but it also provides the time that I feel like, as your superintendent, is desperately needed. We’ve been in this mode of pandemic management, winter storm management, but we have a whole lot of regular business we still need to conduct.”

Deceased KISD bus driver s family speaks out | Education

William “Bill” Jones was more than a beloved school bus driver for the Killeen Independent School District. Jones, originally from Birmingham, Alabama, served two tours in Vietnam for the U.S. Navy. He drove trucks commercially for decades before joining KISD as a bus driver. And, he had a family. Jones, 75, was found dead at Cedar Gap Park in Harker Heights last fall from a gunshot wound to the chest less than 24 hours after he was fired from KISD following an accident involving a child and a Ford F-150 on the first day of in-person school, Aug. 31. Jones was driving the school bus that day, when police said he failed to activate the flashing warning lights and equipment during a bus stop. When a child got off the bus, and then crossed the street, he was hit by the passing pickup, causing serious injury to the student.
