WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security s internal watchdog rejected a proposal to investigate the Secret Service s use of force against racial justice protesters in Lafayette Square in Washington last summer, according to internal records reviewed by USA TODAY.
Such a probe would have looked into the Secret Service s role in forcing protesters out of Lafayette Square near St. John s Episcopal Church, just before former President Donald Trump stood in front of the historic church for a photo op.
The forceful removal of demonstrators on June 1 and the photo op that followed have become a defining moment in Trump s response to the monthslong racial justice protests over the death of George Floyd.

The relentless coronavirus pandemic has caused high levels of anxiety and burnout in health care workers across the country, according to a new UCSF study that is among the first to look closely at mental health in the nation’s emergency rooms during this unprecedented year.
The study, done before the arrival of vaccines, offers a critical snapshot of medical personnel at the helm of a national emergency when little was known about the deadly disease that dominated their lives.

LONG ISLAND, NY Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Republican from Shirley who represents the 1st Congressional District on Long Island, has formally announced his run for governor in 2022.
Zeldin s decision came amidst growing backlash against Gov. Andrew Cuomo: Calls for the governor s resignation have intensified, with some saying sexual harassment accusations and the ongoing controversy over nursing home deaths threaten the governor s ability to govern. The bottom line is this; to save New York, Andrew Cuomo s gotta go, Zeldin said. I will bring the kind of relentless, fighting spirit towards helping to save our state that Andrew Cuomo only reserves for multi-million dollar self-congratulatory book deals, cover-ups, abuse, and self-dealing.
