Vice President Mike Pence tailored parts of his message toward these voters Thursday during a two-stop campaign swing through the state, touting how Mr. Perdue and Ms. Loeffler have been warriors for President Trump and traditional values.
“You remember under the last administration our values and freedoms were under regular assault,” Mr. Pence told the hundreds that turned out in the bitter cold. “The last administration trampled the religious liberties of Americans on a regular basis.”
Mr. Pence said the state’s two Republican senators have been pro-life and pro-Israel and backed Mr. Trump’s conservative court appointees.
Plus, he reminded the crowd that the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee aired concerns about Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s Christian faith, telling her “the dogma lives loudly within you.”
Rep. G.K. Butterfield, North Carolina Democrat, swiftly endorsed Mr. Regan for the post on Thursday.
“As North Carolina’s chief environmental official, Secretary Regan has demonstrated he understands that climate change is a threat to human existence,” said Mr. Butterfield, a past chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Ms. Haaland, a supporter of the “Green New Deal” economic makeover to combat climate change, would be the first Native American to serve as interior secretary.
Mr. Biden “put a true movement progressive in his Cabinet” with the Haaland pick, said Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
During the campaign, Mr. Biden released a $2 trillion plan to combat climate change with a goal of moving the U.S. toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
“I was thinking best case scenario of getting something voted on was going probably to be Sunday but it may be later than that,” the South Dakota Republican said. “I’m hoping… if people are opposed to voice voting it or doing it by [unanimous] consent that we’ll allow it at least to be voted on so we don’t have to go into any kind of a temporary shutdown.”
Congressional leaders were nearing a roughly $900 billion deal earlier this week, that was set to include another, limited, round of direct stimulus payments to individuals and families, aid to small businesses, and extended boosted unemployment benefits.

President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. on Thursday defended his son, Hunter Biden, who is under federal investigation for tax fraud, saying that accusations of wrongdoing against him were âkind of foul play.â
Mr. Biden made the comments in an interview with the late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert.
âYou know that the people who want to make hay here in Washington are going to try to use your adult son as a cudgel against you,â Mr. Colbert said to Mr. Biden. âHow do you feel about that and what do you have to say to those people?â
