Virginia and Maryland are increasing security measures at their state houses following FBI warnings of possible armed protests at state capitols this weekend in the wake of last week’s deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Numerous law enforcement agencies in Virginia established a unified command Wednesday in Richmond as state lawmakers convened this year’s legislative session.
The multi-agency effort includes the Virginia State Police, the Division of Capitol Police, the Richmond Police Department, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, among others.

Donald J. Trump on Wednesday became the first twice-impeached President of the United States, with 10 members of his own party breaking ranks to join a 232–197 majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. The sole article of impeachment accused Trump of “inciting an insurrection” on Jan. 6 in Washington.
Every House Democrat voted for the impeachment, which sets Trump apart in U.S. history from presidents Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson who suffered the indignity once. Besides the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach, four abstained.
Dr. David Kessler, who helped speed the development and approval of AIDS drugs in the 1990s, will become the top science official at Operation Warp Speed.
After a violent mob of pro-Trump supporters forced their way into the Capitol on Jan. 6 to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joseph R. Biden’s election victory, Washington has been on edge. The insurrection resulted in the deaths of five people, including a police officer.
Vice President Mike Pence vouched for the heavy-handed measures at a security briefing Thursday at the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s headquarters with officials from the FBI, Homeland Security Department and the Secret Service.
He said the Trump administration is committed to ensuring a “safe” inauguration for Mr. Biden.
That event is still days away, but the city of Washington is on lockdown.
