Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli s government has weathered accusations of corruption and criticism for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
But his decision to request a new poll comes after months of clashes with Pushpa Kamal Dahal, a former insurgent leader who helped Oli come to power when their political parties merged in 2018.
The pair had previously clashed over their power-sharing agreement and a lack of consultation.

Nepal s President Bidhya Devi Bhandari on Sunday dissolved the country s parliament following recommendation from Cabinet and announced general elections next year.
Bhandari approved the Cabinet s recommendation as per Nepal s constitution, his spokesperson Badrinath Adhikari said in a statement.
She also endorsed the Cabinet s proposal to hold general elections in two phases on April 30 and May 10 next year.

Kathmandu [Nepal], December 20 (ANI): Hundreds of people took to the streets of Kathmandu on Sunday afternoon denouncing the latest move of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to dissolve the House and call an early election as a constitutional coup.
Protestors chanted slogans against KP Sharma Oli and President Bidhya Devi Bhandari for proposing and ratifying the proposal to dissolve parliament and call a fresh election for next year. They termed the move as a Constitutional Coup and demanded both the state and executive head of the nation not to go ahead.
