Red Wing s Youth Commission begins at last

Mayor Sean Dowse swore in the 11 members of the Youth Commission on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
Alainn Hanson began working on a potential youth commission her freshman year. Now, during her senior year at Red Wing High School, the commission has finally come to fruition.
On Wednesday, Dec. 16, staff Liaison Helen Korbel called the meeting to order.
Like all boards and commissions, the first meeting was organization focused. Along with setting a meeting schedule and adopting rules of order, the 11 member commission voted to select a chair, vice chair and pro tem.

The other night as my 2-year-old daughter, Eula, did her best not to sleep, I did as I always do and sang her songs. My mother did the same for me when I was a child. Like Eula, I resisted sleep too.
Around the fourth or fifth number, anticipating my sign off, Eula turned toward me in the dark and whispered, “Passing Through.” It took me a moment to realize what she had said. Because up until that point she’d never requested a song by its given title.
When they built San Diego, they made just a little mistake.
They built condos on the hillside and put the shopping center in a lake.
The Navy brought some of our fathers, the others wandered from Eastern turf.
Attracted like a magnet to the sunshine and the surf.
And we grew good natured people as it would come to pass, with a laid-back lifestyle worried about our chicken and our gas.
But now there’s another issue for which I rally your support, it’s time to hear from the people before it’s settled in some court.
Don’t let ‘em tear down this coaster as some developer has planned. It’s our link with old San Diego, and therefore sacred land, cause people are moving to San Diego at all too quick a pace. San Diego’s constantly changing as we take on a big city face.
In his first inaugural address, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously said “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” At that dark time in 1933, the nation was facing the worst economic depression in its history, not unlike the public health, social and economic challenges the nation faces today.
Roosevelt began his speech by saying: “This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory.”
