US Calls Burma Takeover a Military Coup; China Calls For Non-Interference

(Photo by STR/AFP via Getty Images) (CNSNews.com) – The Biden administration determined swiftly on Tuesday that the military takeover in Burma constitutes a coup – with statutory implications for U.S. aid – shortly after China called on the international community to “avoid escalating tensions and complicating the situation.” The U.S. signaled the likely prospect of further sanctions against the military, which seized power on Monday and detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians. The takeover occurred shortly before parliament was about to convene for its first session since a November election handily won by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. The military had called the poll fraudulent.

Philly immigrants who lived through coups reflect after Capitol breach

3 months ago University of Illinois’ Coup D’état Project has tracked 426 realized coups, 336 attempted coups, and 181 coup conspiracies dating from 1945 to 2019, spanning 165 countries. Should the U.S. be added to the list? Experts who track these sorts of political disruptions are still hashing that out. The Coup D’état Project said until some questions can be clarified, calling last week a “destabilizing event” is appropriate. Some experts have suggested calling it a self-coup because of the president’s role in inspiring these events. Whatever analysts choose to call last week’s events, Marta doesn’t want to see it happen again. She asked WHYY not to use her last name because of her immigration status in the U.S.

(Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times) In Latin America, a region not unfamiliar with assaults on democracy, the attack by pro-Trump extremists on the U.S. Capitol in Washington on Wednesday prompted widespread alarm and dark reminders of political upheaval in the region. The phrase “GolpeDeEstadoEnEEUU,” (“coup d’état in the United States”), was trending on Twitter as analysts and others likened the political chaos in Washington to historical and contemporary unrest in their homelands.

Trump supporters gather in the U.S. capital to protest the ratification of President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral college victory over President Trump. Future regional leaders, he said, may respond to U.S. critiques of their democratic processes with incredulity: “You don’t have moral authority. Your country has serious problems. How are you going to say what I’m doing is bad?” For many in Latin America, there was considerable irony in the outbreak of political tumult in a nation often accused of fomenting coups throughout the region.
